Typical transit times for air and sea freight to Kenya, and the hidden steps that add days if you do not plan for them.
Transit time is more than the flight or the voyage. Door-to-door timing includes pickup, export handling, the main leg, customs clearance and final delivery.
Air freight: typically 5–10 days
Air cargo to Nairobi’s JKIA is the fastest option. Most of the variation comes from flight connections and how quickly documents are cleared on arrival.
Sea freight: typically 4–7 weeks
Ocean freight to Mombasa depends on the US port, the sailing schedule and any transhipment. East Coast and Gulf ports often have shorter routings to East Africa than the West Coast.
What adds time
- Incomplete or inaccurate packing lists and invoices
- Missing certificates for regulated goods
- Waiting for a consolidated container to fill (LCL)
- Delivery to remote towns
Most delays are paperwork delays. We check documents before cargo leaves the US. See how our USA to Kenya service works.
A realistic sea freight timeline
- Booking and pickup: a few days to a week, depending on location.
- Consolidation (LCL only): waiting for a shared container to be loaded and closed.
- Ocean transit: several weeks, usually with transhipment in Europe, the Mediterranean or the Middle East.
- Arrival and clearance in Mombasa: a few days when documents are complete.
- Inland delivery: by SGR rail or road to Nairobi and other towns.
A realistic air freight timeline
Air shipments usually depart within a few days of collection, fly via a European, Middle Eastern or African hub, and reach JKIA in Nairobi. Clearance can be completed within days when documents are correct, followed by local delivery.
How to avoid delays
- Prepare an itemised packing list and commercial invoice before pickup.
- Check whether your goods need a KEBS Certificate of Conformity or import permit.
- Make sure the receiver’s name, ID and KRA PIN match the documents.
- Avoid peak seasons where possible, or book early.
- Keep your phone and WhatsApp available for questions from the clearing agent.
